Chugach removing overhead line along Benson Boulevard

Chugach Electric Association is replacing about a third of a mile of existing overhead electrical distribution line with underground service. The single-phase 7,200-volt line runs along the south side of Benson Boulevard from approximately Spenard Road to Minnesota Drive.

In order to bury a line, Spenard Road will be closed between 29th Avenue and Benson for periods up to 12 hours, beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, and perhaps again on Sunday, Sept. 28, if necessary.

Chugach is removing the overhead poles and wire as part of an ongoing program under a state statute that requires utilities in Anchorage to replace some existing overhead lines with underground facilities.

Chugach expects its contractor on the Benson project to complete burying the new lines and removing the overhead poles and wires by mid-October.

Chugach is the largest electric utility in Alaska, providing power for Alaskans throughout the Railbelt through retail, wholesale and economy energy sales.
