Seven members run for Chugach board

Seven Chugach Electric Association members are running for three seats on the cooperative's board of directors in this spring's election. Each seat is for a three-year term.

The 2005 candidates are H.A. "Red" Boucher, Samuel W. Cason, Alan Christopherson, Patricia B. "Pat" Jasper, Uwe Kalenka, Mark L. Smith and Elizabeth "Liz" Vazquez. Boucher, Cason and Jasper are incumbents.

Boucher, 84, is a self-employed communications consultant with H.A. "Red" Boucher & Associates. He is also president of Alaska Wireless Technology. Boucher has been a Chugach member for 28-1/2 years. He was nominated by the Nominating Committee.

Cason, 45, is a self-employed attorney. He has been a Chugach member for 12 years. Cason was nominated by the Nominating Committee.

Christopherson, 52, is a civil engineer with PND. He has been a Chugach member for 14 years. Christopherson was nominated by petition.

Jasper, 75, is a small-business owner. She has been a Chugach member for 40 years. Jasper was nominated by the Nominating Committee.

Kalenka, 60, is a self-employed property manager. He has been a Chugach member for more than 34 years. Kalenka was nominated by petition.

Smith, 44, is the General Manager/President of Yukon Fuel Company. He has been a Chugach member for seven years. Smith was nominated by the Nominating Committee.

Vazquez, 53, is an attorney with the State of Alaska. She has been a Chugach member for 16 years. Vazquez was nominated by petition.

In addition, members will be voting on three proposed bylaw amendments.

Mail-voting packets will be mailed to about 62,000 Chugach members of record the week of March 28. Members have until noon on April 25 to return mail ballots. Voting will also be allowed at the cooperative's annual meeting April 28 at the Egan Civic & Convention Center. Results of the election will be announced at the annual meeting.

Chugach is the largest electric utility in Alaska, providing power for Alaskans throughout the Railbelt through retail, wholesale and economy energy sales..
