Power outage leaves about 5,800 Chugach Electric members without power

About 5,800 Chugach Electric members experienced a power outage starting at 10:21 a.m. this morning.

The outage was caused by a component failure at the utility's Sand Lake Substation, located on the Old Seward Highway near Dimond Boulevard. Chugach officials are investigating the reason for the failure.

Chugach crews and the utility's power control center employees worked to reroute power to the members being carried on the Sand Lake Substation to other substations in order to get power restored as quickly as possible. All but 2,100 had power restored within about a half-hour, while the last customer, a portion of the Dimond Center Mall, had power restored at 12:38 p.m.

Chugach is the largest electric utility in Alaska, providing power for Alaskans throughout the Railbelt through retail, wholesale and economy energy sales.
