Chugach Electric starts transmission line project in East Anchorage

Work has begun on a transmission line project in East Anchorage which will result in improved reliability for residents.

Chugach Electric will be upgrading the 115-kilovolt transmission line on Northern Lights Boulevard, starting west of Wesleyan Drive and ending at Patterson Road. The work includes some pile driving for the transmission line structures that will be erected. Pre-drilling and pile driving work will begin within the next few days, and continue until Feb. 20. Any remaining pile work is expected to resume March 6.

The upgrade is expected to take 2-to-3 months and will require some lane closures along the eastbound land of Northern Lights Boulevard.

Chugach Electric has been working for the past several years with area community councils and the Municipality of Anchorage to minimize the impact on residents and businesses in this area. Chugach also sent a series of letters to the businesses and residents directly impacted by the construction. The benefits of the upgrade include providing a stronger system for transmission of power between substations and replacing aging infrastructure, thereby improving reliability.

Chugach is the largest electric utility in Alaska, providing power for Alaskans throughout the Railbelt through retail, wholesale and economy energy sales.
